A very high accuracy score can look suspicious, especially when it comes from a lower-rated player. However, there are plenty of completely legitimate reasons for someone to play an unusually accurate game.
Why high accuracy doesn’t necessarily mean cheating
Chess accuracy depends heavily on the position, and some games are simply easier to play accurately.
For example:
- Your opponent makes an early mistake and the winning continuation is obvious.
- Much of the game follows known opening theory.
- The position contains several forced moves.
- The game is short, giving fewer opportunities to make mistakes.
- One player is significantly stronger than the other.
In these situations, even an amateur player can produce a game with extremely high accuracy. The distinction is how difficult the moves were to find.
Difficult positions matter
This is one of the reasons ChessCheaterDetector measures position complexity as part of its analysis.
Rather than asking only:
How often did this player agree with the engine?
we instead ask:
How often did they agree with the engine when finding the best move was genuinely difficult?

What signals are more useful?
There is no single statistic that proves someone is cheating.
More useful analysis considers several signals together, including:
- Engine agreement: How frequently does the player select moves strongly preferred by the engine?
- Centipawn loss: How much strength does the player typically lose compared with the engine's best move?
- Position complexity: Are highly accurate moves being played in straightforward positions, or in positions where choosing between candidate moves is difficult?
- Player strength: A sequence of exceptionally strong moves means something different when played by a grandmaster than when played by a beginner.
- Repeated behavior: One brilliant game isn't especially strong evidence. A consistent pattern across many games is much more interesting.
Can a 100% accuracy game be legitimate?
Yes.
Short or highly forcing games can produce extremely high (sometimes, near-perfect) accuracy without anything unusual happening. Likewise, a cheater doesn't necessarily produce 100% accuracy.
Someone using engine assistance selectively could intentionally avoid always playing the top engine move.
This is why simple rules such as: “Anything above 95% accuracy indicates cheating” don't work particularly well.
So when should you actually be suspicious?
High accuracy becomes more interesting when it appears alongside other unusual signals.
For example, a player might:
- find engine-level moves in complicated positions;
- make very few meaningful mistakes;
- outperform what you would normally expect from their rating; and
- produce similar performances across multiple games.
Even then, statistical analysis can indicate that behavior is unusual, but it cannot by itself prove what happened during a game.
